Reliable in flavour, consistent in quality — this Brazilian coffee comes from Project Origin, a well known term for those who are familiar with the specialty coffee scene. For those who aren’t it’s Sasa Sestic’s (world barista champion, but much more than that) child. A company made to empower coffee producers with knowledge and experience needed to produce high quality coffees consistently. Sasa and his team of coffee professionals began this story as a direct trade, community-driven, green bean exporting company.

This year has been challenging for us when it comes to Brazil. Fazenda Pantano was not shipped to Europe, the prices went up significantly and we had to source something else with lower quantities and higher price point. But not everything is for the worse, we ran into Samba while cupping Brazilian lots at World of coffee this year and it hit our warehouse shortly after.

Samba is an energetic music genre from Brazil and, just like coffee, has its roots in Africa. This Regional Samba comes from Minas Gerais, and its profile celebrates the rich chocolate and nut characteristics that are iconic for this region. The team from Project Origin sources the Samba coffees from a handful of farms in the Carmo de Minas growing area, including Santa Lucia, Santa Ines, Fazenda Furnas and Fazenda Sertão. The smaller screen size of the coffees chosen for this regional lot contributes to the body and texture of the coffee and enhances the yellow bourbon qualities we expect from a beautiful Brazil natural.

When cherries are ripe and red they’re picked and delivered to the mill. After that, the cherries are sorted before being placed on drying beds and rotated regularly whilst drying for 20-30 days until moisture content reaches 10-12%. After drying, beans are combined by the Project Origin team to create the Samba profile and stored in dried cherry pods until ready for milling and export.

This coffee has a profile that is sweet and full bodied, with flavours of chocolate, hazelnut, raisin and citrus with hints of earthiness. It’s perfect for espresso and coffees served with milk.
