Guatemala | Pampojilá

Pampojilá is a coffee plantation located in one of the most beautiful highland regions of Guatemala, in the immediate vicinity of Lake Atitlán, a breathtaking lake surrounded by
three volcanoes. The rich volcanic soil in this area provides good growing conditions for coffee trees. The plantation was started in the middle of the 19th century by Manuel Díaz and is now owned and managed by the Herrera Family. All of the coffee is grown under regulated shade provided by special trees called Chalúm, a leguminosae that has the ability to transform nitrogen in the soil into amino acids, which work as as a natural fertiliser.

It was following the Agatha storm in 2012 that Alex Herrera bought the Pampojila farm, whose production tools had been completely destroyed. Having restored it and through sheer determination, he managed to begin production again and in so doing restored jobs for about one hundred families. Restarting coffee production of an area of around 500 hectares was a large challenge at first.  However Alex was fully committed to renovating and developing the farm, first by replanting coffee trees then by renovating the mill. Today he has 250 hectares of Caturra coffee trees planted at an altitude of between 1,470 and 1,720 metres; the remaining 250 hectares serve as a nature reserve.
